Kepa Kwab ~ Beautiful Water Official Launch
Celebrating the Launch of Kepa Kwab
On October 21, 2024, we gathered at the Art of Seafood in East Perth to celebrate the launch of Kepa Kwab, a unique non-alcoholic beverage that embodies the spirit and stories of our land. Translating to “beautiful water” in Noongar, Kepa Kwab is more than just a delicious drink; it’s a celebration of the land’s stories, a connection to Indigenous heritage, and a beacon for community empowerment.
Kepa Kwab was created by Prepare Produce Provide in collaboration with Funk Drinks Co, Chef Rohan Park, 14k By Araluen, Elder and Australian Bush Food Specialist Dale Tilbrook, Marvick Native Farms, Belmont City College and Patrick O’Brian from North Metro TAFE.
Powerful Voices and Culture
The event was opened by MC Chrissy Morrisey, setting a warm and welcoming tone for the evening. The highlight of the night was a Water Ceremony, led by Senior Maaman Vaughan McGuire, which honored the Derbal Yerrigan (Swan River). This deeply meaningful ritual grounded the event in respect for the land and its people, reminding all attendees of the connection between water, community, and culture.
Thoughtful Speeches from Leaders
Key speakers shared powerful insights throughout the afternoon. Cath MacDougall, founder of PPP (Prepare Produce Provide), along with Joan Lim, the Board Chair, and Nicola Stokes, General Manager of AMP Foundation, addressed the importance of Kepa Kwab in supporting vulnerable youth through food education and cultural initiatives. Their words spoke about the far-reaching impact Kepa Kwab will have in empowering the next generation.
Youth Ambassadors Rishaye Shaw and Molly West, added their voices, speaking passionately about the project’s meaning for youth and future generations. Their excitement for Kepa Kwab’s mission highlighted the deep community connection behind the product. Molly also spoke about her excitement as a young Aboriginal artist to be included in the process of the design of the can and to have her artwork featured.
Funk Drinks and Buy West Eat Best were on hand to complement the dining experience, showcasing local and sustainable ingredients. The combination of exquisite flavors and cultural connection made the event not just a celebration of Kepa Kwab, but of the broader Indigenous and local food movement.
Chef Rohan Park shared his passion for incorporating Indigenous ingredients into modern cuisine, emphasizing the importance of cultural preservation through food.
