Djinda Ngardak 2024 Culinary Youth Camp
The 2024 Djinda Ngardak Culinary Youth Camp, a weeklong program for First Nations Youth occurred this year in the Southwest region of Goomburrup (Bunbury) from the 25th – 29th November. Indigenous students from all over Western Australia gathered here for this unique opportunity to celebrate the rich intersection of food and culture while developing essential accredited skills for employments pathways.
Students participated in several hands-on workshops with celebrity and renowned chefs including Paul “Yoda” Iskov, Mindy Woods, Melissa Palinkas and Prepare Produce Provides Head Chef Tanya Healy. They were guided and mentored in food preparation and creation, gaining valuable skills and experience. Students learnt about local ingredients, sustainable practices and the deep connection between food, land and culture while brainstorming ideas in preparation for the Gala Dinner.
The program is centred around students developing culinary skills combining modern techniques with traditional and locally sourced ingredients.
Throughout the week students participated in cultural activities with local Elders and Cultural Leaders, as well as teamwork and leadership activities. These activities included combing the beach looking for materials and inspiration to create table decorations, workshops with Elder Dale Tilbrook and other leaders, learning about bush food, native ingredients, and the amazing health and medical benefits of these locally sourced foods. Students spent time on Country exploring the local area, hearing stories about the history of the Wadandi people and learning about Country and Culture. The week was a participation in, and a celebration of Indigenous art, music and dance.
The program culminated with students showcasing their skills at the Goomburrup Gala Dinner by co-creating, preparing and serving dinner for 100 guests. Prepare Produce Provides non-alcoholic beverage Kepa Kwab ~ Beautiful Water, which was officially launched this year, was also a highlight at the event. Guests enjoyed the evening’s entertainment which included music by the amazing multi award-winning composers Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse.
