The Bilya project: Ni! Derbyl Yerrigan Waanginy (Listen! The Swan River is Speaking).
A 15-week, artists-in-residence program at Bassendean Primary and Governor Stirling Senior High schools.
Focusing on a sensory narrative about the Swan River, the program will bring together Noongar elders, professional artists, and environmental scientists to create a public presentation of immersive, site-specific, performance installations and digital stories.
“The Bilya project combines cross cultural ecological knowledge, environmental science, visual arts and digital storytelling with music, language and song to capture a myriad of local stories from the past and present to reflect on how we work, live and play on and beside the Swan River,”
- Bassendean PS arts teacher and co-director Kylie Barr

“From a young age growing up in the Kimberley, we were brought in to a life where alcohol is a part of life. It’s not a good thing. We need to break that cycle. Having this product and the stories behind it will be very impactful.”

PPP Youth Ambassador
This program has given Prepare Produce Provide the opportunity to showcase our key methodology of a holistic approach to training, in collaboration with WA youth and top WA chefs including Chef Rohan Park. It incorporates Australian traditional botanicals that have been ethically sourced and in consultation with leading Elder and Bushfood specialist Dale Tilbrook.
This program creates a new space to encourage conversations through collaboration and training for special events by providing a real alternative choice to consumption of alcohol.
This “Real Works” creative opportunity provides a learning structure format mapped to curriculum outcomes showcasing 25 First Nations students who took part in the educational Djinda Ngardak Non-Alcoholic Beverage Program coordinated by Prepare Produce Provide as part of the Women in Mining Summit (WA) on the 21st of October 2023.
The Djinda Ngardak Culinary Experience promotes strong cultural values and identity while developing high skill levels and an understanding of the hospitality industry.
Leading up to the event students and teachers were involved in masterclasses working with industry professionals to develop a variety of creative non-alcoholic beverages using local produce and traditional ingredients from Western Australia. Integrating health and well-being, art workshops and training at North Metro TAFE were conducted to gain an understanding of the preparation of beverages and service practices. Also involved in this program are students from Belmont City Community College.
PPP Founder and Program Director, Cath MacDougall, believes this event is an innovative opportunity to share powerful messaging of healthy choices and creative ways to serve drinks.
The artwork for the Kepa Kwab beverages has been created by the super talented Molly West, Youth Ambassador for Prepare Produce Provide.
